Perhaps the most important characteristic of nickel alloys is its heat resistance properties. Singularly, nickel can exhibit outstanding heat resisting behavior. Yet, in an alloyed form, the UNS N08024 Nickel Alloy Pipe not only retains this property but also gains other properties including its resistance to corrosion. For an alloy to be used as a pipe in businesses, it must exhibit some levels of resistance to corrosion and high strength. Grade UNS N08024 is an alloy of nickel and chromium with a significant addition of molybdenum. The basic chemistry of this alloy makes the pipes impervious to both chlorine ion related pitting as well as crevice corrosion. In stainless steels like UNS N08024, the addition of molybdenum is associated with benefits such as resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
This is particularly noted when the ASME SB 468 UNS N08024 Pipe has been used in applications where highly corrosive substances like chorine or sulfur are present. The deposition of such corrosive compounds on the walls of the pipes causes cracks, thereby resulting in leaks. In industries where oxidation is a common problem, the use of chromium alloyed pipes minimizes corrosion. Addition of chromium higher than 12% results in the development of a passivating oxide layer. Since the content of chromium in ASME SB 729 UNS N08024 Pipe ranges between 22% to about 25%, the passivated oxide layer drastically reduces the risk of oxidation corrosion. Another benefit of this layer is that it is self-repairing, which means that in the even of the layer getting depleted, exposure to environments with higher atmospheric oxygen can restore the passivating layer on the ASTM B468 UNS N08024 Welded Pipe. Nickel alloys like the UNS N08024 produced under specifications - ASTM B468 & ASTM B729 are to be supplied in an annealed condition. Per these specifications, there are tests conducted on the pipes to check their conformance to their mechanical properties. Lastly, the ASTM B729 UNS N08024 Seamless Pipe mandates conformance to the chemistry requirements of the specification as well.
